  	Parish burial record: John Ward, Parish Clerk for between 13 and 14 yea s buried. Here is an article I found regarding parish clerks of that time period: "They should be at least 20 years old, and known to the parson "as a ma of honest conversation and sufficient for his reading, writing and co mpetent skill in singing" Canon 91 (1603). Functions - reading the less ons and epistles, singing in the choir, giving out the hymns, leading t he responses, serving at the altar and other like duties, opening of th e church, ringing the bell, digging graves if there be no sexton. The r ole of Sexton is usually combined in country parishes. They are the sac istan, the keeper of holy things relating to divine service. Responsib le for the care of the church, vestments and vessels, keeping the churc h clean, ringing bells, opening/closing doors, digging graves and care o f the churchyard".

  From an email from Jim White, a Ward researcher in Yorkshire, which quo tes from a book: 'Whashton Smelt Mill: ....... "In the early eighteenth century, howeve , it was used for smelting copper ore from a vein in Feldom and, in Ju e 1728, Matthew Blackburne of Gales, in Kirkby Ravensworth, blacksmith , was indicted with breaking into the copper smelting mill at Whashton b elonging to John Ward and John Appleby and stealing 4 iron bars worth 1 1d. The mill probably closed soon afterwards." - There was a John Appleby born at Romaldkirk 23 May 1697 (same age as J ohn Ward) - There was a John Appleby, son of George born at Barnard Castle 10 Mar 1 686 -There was a John Appleby born at Barnard Castle 14 Apr 1706 and marrie d to Ann Robinson 20 Jul 1726 at Barnard Castle) -A John Appleby was buried 17 Oct 1741 and also one on 25 Jun 1753 and a other 26 Apr 1757, all at Barnard Castle. Since smelters generally die d young, the earlier dates are more likely. Another mention of this same mill is an extract from English Heritage's R ecord of Scheduled Monuments where it states: "A mill known as Whashton High Mill was in existence in 1675. There was still a mill at the site in 1728 when it belonged to John Ward and J ohn Appleby, who also held the lease for Feldom Mines. Based on the level o f technology at the Feldom mines their period of working, and consequentl y that of the smelt mill, was probably late 17th to mid-18th century. I t has been estimated that the production of copper concentrate from the F eldom mines was in excess of 400 long tons." Whashton is only about 5 miles from Marske, so very feasible this is ou John Ward.
