  	Most of the Whitells of this time period were in Bowes. The parish regi sters for Bowes don't start until 1674. That's why I cannot find a birt h record for him. However, there was a John Whitell living at Scargill (between Bowes and B arningham) in the 1673 Hearth Tax Poll. I am pretty sure this must be H ugh's father. The fact that Hugh married Margaret Ward of Woodclose mak es Scargill even more likely since they are only a couple of miles apar t. Plus Margaret was buried in Barningham, 3 miles from Scargill.
